Leader’s Alliance Meeting

Leaders Alliance meeting focuses on food security

Western Sydney Diabetes held a very successful Alliance meeting at the
PARKROYAL Parramatta on July 27.

The topic of ‘Feeding our City’, brought guests both in-person and virtually who were treated to a series of outstanding speakers.

Each of the experts outlined the need for our residents to eat better, but also provided their own expertise on how this could happen.

WSD Prevention Manager Janine Dawson said the audience was treated to hearing from Professor Grant Brinkworth from the CSIRO on the new diabetes diet and were also able given samples of the the brand new packaged meals to taste test.

Professor Clare Collins, Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Newcastle, provided a fascinating presentation on how people can eat better and talked about the ‘No Money, No Time’ program which is suitable for anyone who wants to improve their diet- on a budget and Sarah Flomersfeld from OzHarvest gave great insights into the challenges of providing food for our residents along with the special needs and challenges being experienced in western Sydney.

Sarah Flomersfeld from OzHarvest, WSD Prevention Manager Janine Dawson, The Hills Mayor Peter Gangemi and The Hills Councillor Mark Hodges.

The final speaker Morgan Stewart provided interesting insights into the many facets of Blacktown Workers Club Group along with exciting news on a new commitment to help us fight diabetes for the next 5 years. Morgan also outlined the WEXPO event and the many opportunities this holds for our Alliance members.

“We know many were disappointed they weren’t able to attend on the day, but the presentations are now available on our Hub,” Ms Dawson said.

“It was great to get together and of course it’s always good to be able to meet up in person. We’re already aware of some very positive collaborative opportunities that are now being explored between members which resulted from discussions on the day.
